us 395 closure flyer for website 2024

A small section of U.S. 395 will fully close for 15 days while crews install two wildlife crossings underneath the roadway as part of the Sonora Junction Shoulders Project. During the closure, there will be no vehicle access between the closure points. There is a detour:

The detour route is about 10 miles longer for north and southbound travelers. With the increase in traffic along the detour, please be alert. The detour is primarily single lanes for both directions. Do not pass in no-passing zones. Watch for wildlife. There is very limited or no cell service along the route.

Caltrans project area sonora shoulders project closure 2024

The Sonora Junction Shoulder Widening Project is widening the existing paved shoulders to the standard 8-foot shoulder width on U.S. 395 in Mono County from Burcham Flat Road to the south side of the junction with State Route 108.

Crews are installing shoulder rumble strips, upgrading existing guardrails to Midwest Guardrail System, correcting the super-elevations of three substandard curves, installing approximately 1,050 linear feet of retaining walls, stabilizing cut slopes with anchored wire mesh, and extending or replacing existing culverts.

Additionally, the preferred alternative calls for the installation of wildlife undercrossing structures in two locations and wildlife exclusionary fencing to connect the two structures.

This project is meant to enhance roadway safety and make the highway accessible to all modes of transportation.

FAQs

Q: How much longer is the detour compared to taking U.S. 395?

A: The detour is roughly 10 miles longer between Bridgeport and Holbrook Junction than the route on U.S. 395. We aren't sure how long it will take with all traffic diverted to that route, but it otherwise shouldn't increase travel time too much (for north/south only - it does add some time for those using Sonora Pass and trying to head south).

Q: Will the town of Bridgeport be open?

A: Yes!

Q: Will Burcham Flat Road and Lobdell Lake be accessible?

A: Burcham Flat Road will be accessible from the north, off Eastside Lane in Coleville, and from there you can drive to Lobdell Lake Road (high clearance 4x4 advised). There will be no access from the south where Burcham Flat Road meets US 395, this junction will be closed, so you'll need to turn around and exit from the north end.

Q: Will Little Walker Road be accessible?

A. No, Little Walker Road will not be accessible during the closure of US 395. Obsidian Campground, Molybdenite Creek trailhead, and Emma Lake trailhead will not be accessible either.

Q: Is Sonora Pass (108) open during the closure?

A: Yes! You can still take the spectacular Sonora Pass. Once you reach US 395, you'll head north. If you ultimately are heading to the Bridgeport area or another destination south of the 395 closure, you'll need to use the detour starting at NV 208 Holbrook Junction. This will add a bit of time to your trip, so please plan accordingly.

Monitor Pass (89) and Tioga Pass (120) are also open. A reservation is required on weekends only (Saturdays and Sundays from 5am to 4pm) to drive into or through Yosemite National Park via Tioga Pass.
